(ERNESTO LEON – USA)
These paintings are inspired by the colonial art of Latin America but also have a contemporary political character and content.
Ernesto Leon, “Reflections”, 2004, oil and gold leaf on wood
The themes of these paintings are a sort of personal diary. They are paintings I create as a result of reading the world’s news on the internet. Before one can build something new, one must tear something down. That is what I try to do here.
Nevertheless, I am not much of a believer in the new corporate media, and my only possibility of self-expression is to express my non-conformity in terms of my own artistic tradition. The paintings are not only a response to corporate media but also a reaction against those who lie to inform us. My belief in diversity and justice guide my work.
