______________

“‘The Road So Far” is a deep meditation on elemental aspects of life across time: experience, documentation, changes. The images, the materials all speak to the passage of time. Whitfield’s photo of “The Porch Crew,” captures three Black men who shared memories and history sitting on a country store porch in Keachi, La. Their stories bring his installation to life. Similarly, Lott has always looked back for ideas and materials. He repurposed scraps of furniture into “Yard Dog,” a canine sculpture assembled from varied pieces of wood. Lott uses a cane to point to the dog’s head and the chest.

Lott’s works appear to defy gravity. He says he simply paid attention to the principles of architecture.”

Station Museum of Contemporary Art extended its exhibition “The Road So Far: Jesse Lott & Travis Whitfield” through September 5, 2021. You have more time to see Houston artist Jesse Lott’s intricate sculptures and drawings, and Louisiana artist Travis Whitfield’s installation of a full size southern style shotgun house filled with domestic objects and photographs.

The sculptures at Station gave me a handle on why Jesse Lott associates the term “urban frontier” with his art.
